Lance Koudele: Behind the Shot

Getting good shots is harder than you think. Read what Lance Koudele had to say about the shooting of our recent Dakine ad in his blog on lancekoudele.com.

Lake Huron

Canada is one of my favorite countries in the World. I hoped on a plane to Buffalo, Ny where I met up with fellow Dakine Team rider Sam Medysky. After boarder patrol stripped our car clean we where off to Sam's summer cottage near Sauble Beach on Lake Huron. Sam's place is sick, right on the beach, waist high kickers, and a trampoline in the back yard.
After a few good days of riding we hit up Sauble Beach for the 1st annual Sauble Kite Jam, put on by Sam's school Kiterider. The first day of competition kicked off with a slider jam behind a jet ski. We were split into 3 heats with the top 2 advancing to the 6 man final. We each got one warm up lap and three that counted per heat. In the end it came down to me and fellow Real Team Rider Brandon Scheid in a tie breaker heat where he was able to edge me out, leaving me with 2nd place. BCS cleaned up in 3rd completing the Real Team's sweep of the event.

After the event Sam and I took the up box to Oliphant and set it up in ankle deep water with a barrel bonk on a ladder. Definitely one of the most fun features I have ever hit.

Hurricane Sessions

Hurricane Earl rolled through the Outer Banks and set up a perfect little Urban Wake Park.

Swamp Shreddin

After the Hood Jam I headed back to Hatteras Island to continue coaching at Real Watersports. Turns out while I was away the wind was cranking so as soon as I arrived it was straight to the water. It's a weird feeling riding on the west coast one day and the east coast the next. My hommie Chuck from LifEthereal came out for a couple sessions and shot some pics and video.

Once the wind died out it really died, haven't kited in a few weeks now. Good thing we have jet skis and sliders. I've been getting a little bored with the features we have so I decided to spice things up a bit. So I threw a barrel into the mix and used the kicker to make better use of the wall ride.

Back in the Hood

Once everyone cleared out after SSS I was able to get back to focusing on this years video projects. This year some hommies and I decided to come together and form a North American, mixed brand, filming crew called the NA Blend. Malsen and Medysky mobbed out to throw down with Scheid and me in Hatteras, while Ben Paillard came out from France to shoot for the next issue of Stance DVD Magazine. My boy Jamy D also swung through to catch a few more shots for a segment we've been shooting for a while now.

After a week in Hatteras we flew out to Hood River for the Ro-Sham-Throwdown Slider Jam and to do some shooting. Parker rolled into town from Florida with a fat slider on the roof and a winch on the tow hitch. Mad sessions went down and the event was sick.

Check out some teasers we have so far:

Triple S Invitational

The 2010 SSS Invitational kicked off a couple days ago. We've had some sick conditions so far. Joby and Ruben arrived with the new 2011 Darksides for us to test out. The board is just what I need to bust massive load and pop tricks in boots and turn around and hit a slider. Not to mention the wicked graphics. The sessions started with an afternoon park session in front of Real. I was on my 13m Fuel with the 5th line set up so I could ditch it without getting pulled into the rail. The course was four hits: coming in starboard it started with the LF Wall ride rolling into the SSS up flat box, tack and hit the Real Dock followed by the John Wayne up flat down box. Everyone was throwin down and the show went on till the sun was down. But the day wasn't over yet, the opening party had begun while we were on the water, live music and lots of beers. We got up on stage for the rider introduction and signed a few autographs before moving on to the after party at the riders houses that Real provided.

Yesterday was day two and dam what a day. It was nuking around 30 mph. We got to recover a little bit in the morning before starting a down winder through the Planet of the Apes. I was dum and took out my 9m so I was lit up. We stopped at the slick for a while to shoot and make use of the butter flat water. I hit a few tricks but mostly just looped into orbit. Later that evening was another park session at the Real Slick only just with the John Wayne. I wised up and took my 7m Fuel on the Len10 Pro Bar. Elkus had the flashes out so the session lasted until we couldn't see. After that we were all dead so everyone called it a night early.

Today the wind has blown itself out and switched directions. Should be a chill day, we'll be getting out behind the jet ski later this afternoon.

Check out the wildcard video that won me my spot in the event:

Back On It

Down time is over, riding is on.

Past week has been the usual mix of conditions. Started with a mellow SW session with Bryan Elkus shooting in the slick. Just took it easy so my knee could get warmed back up but that didn't keep me from stomping some good shizz.

Then the winds increased for a sick 30mph+ loop feast. But that didn't last long before it completely shut off. The next day we had perfect glassy water for a slider jam behind the jet ski.

Also threw in some skate sessions here and there.

My hommie Nate Appel just got into town from Hood so shooting for this years videos will begin soon. Keep slackin yo, peace.

Up and running... sort of

After spraining my knee a couple days ago I decided it was time to get my own website up and running while I was stuck on the couch. So here it is, the first blog post of ericrienstra.com.

I'm on the East Coast of the US now, coaching kiteboarding at Real Watersports on Hatteras Island, North Carolina. Hatteras is one of a few small sand bar islands that form the Outer Banks and separate Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean. It's a super sick place to ride because you have flat water riding conditions on the Sound side and waves on the Atlantic side. So far every day since I arrived I have either kited, surfed, wakeboarded, or skated. I have a feeling this is going to be an eventful summer.

Here are some vids to check out from the past couple years:
